Q: What advice do you have on forming a research question for the extended essay?
A: don't even think about forming a research question until you have for sure what you are doing. You might feel lost in the beginning so I recommend choosing a business and then something you want to investigate about it. Once you have enough information obtained you can then write a RQ which focuses your essay. example:
Q: Do you have any advice on the research process of the extended essay? Was there a system that you found worked really well? Is there something regarding the research and investigation process that students should avoid? A: Begin with basic articles so you easily obtain information but then make sure you only use academic resources. You will without a doubt use academic research paper that aren't about your topic but have information in there that will be valuable, so be ready to read a lot of papers. Researchgate and JSTOR are incredible. Also, make sure that you know what you are researching. Break down everything you need to know about, list it out, and research about it. Q: Did you find that completing the extended essay in a specific 'order' or certain tasks benefited you in any way? A: Not really. It depends on how each person works. There is no static way of doing this and you have to be flexible. Q: What should you absolutely DO? A: Absolutely breakdown each section of the EE and fully understand what you have to do for each section. Q: What should you absolutely AVOID? A: Do not leave the research for after the summer. By the end of summer you MUST have your research done and you SHOULD have it all written. If you do not your life is going to be hell in grade 12 and you risk not doing well at all. Q: Do you have any other advice that you would like to give in completing the extended essay? A: Make sure you do it with a lot of time and that you have a topic that you really understand and can obtain information about. Q: What are some traps or things to avoid when completing the extended essay? A: Putting too much information and repeating it. You want to make sure that you do not repeat information because that is just not effective. Fitting everything within the word count is a challenge and you want to present enough in-depth information but also a balanced and meaningful analysis about that information that answers that research question. |

Q: What advice do you have on forming a research question for the extended essay?
A: The best advice I could give for the research questions is to keep in mind that your research question will always be changing. Do not spend too much time and hassle into formulating your research question but rather get a solid one down and start your research with that. As the research process progresses, you can make adjustments to your research questions accordingly. Q: Do you have any advice on the research process of the extended essay? Was there a system that you found worked really well? Is there something regarding the research and investigation process that students should avoid? A: I found that one of the main contributing factors to success in the research process is to start as early as you can. Focus on collecting relevant information to your research question as well as maybe making a timeline of chronological events relevant to your research; that is something I did and it made organizing all the information I collected much easier to digest. Avoid just writing stuff down for the sake of writing it down; this will make it all cluttered and just make sure the information you record will be useful to answering your investigation. Q: Did you find that completing the extended essay in a specific 'order' or certain tasks benefited you in any way? A: A strategy I use for essay writing in general is to write the introduction and all that last, after writing the body and really getting to solving the investigation and answering the research question. Make sure you get to a good consensus and then write the introduction; sometimes, when writing the introduction first, the body and investigation tends to change and then the information does not flow as well. Q: What should you absolutely DO? A:
Q: What should you absolutely AVOID? A:
Q: Do you have any other advice that you would like to give in completing the extended essay? A: Use your resources effectively: consult your supervisor and constantly refer to the criteria. The whole process is more enjoyable when you investigate a topic you are genuinely interested in so make sure you do that. Don’t procrastinate with this assignment and really try to be open to criticism and change. Have fun! Q: What are some traps or things to avoid when completing the extended essay? A: Overall just avoid saving it until the last minute. Work in an organized manner and tackle this assignment bit by bit over time: you are given a lot of it. Don’t copy someone else's work because you will get in trouble and no one wants that. Something I did that I think one should definitely avoid is that what I would write would lack depth and explanation. Make sure you don’t just scratch the surface on your investigation but make sure you are doing everything you can to really explain the whys and whats of everything. :) |
Q: What advice do you have on forming a research question for the extended essay?
A: First choose your unit of interest (marketing, human resources, etc.) before you start creating your RQ, make sure it is the one that interests you the most Q: Do you have any advice on the research process of the extended essay? Was there a system that you found worked really well? Is there something regarding the research and investigation process that students should avoid? A: The reason your RQ changes so often (in the beginning stages) is because you either have too much information and you found something more interesting to research more in-depth, but there is also a possibility you don't find enough relevant information to be able to answer the question. I don't really have a method for researching besides typing in keywords into the search browser, like: "China + Disney + Censorship" if you want to research censorship of Disney movies in China. Q: Did you find that completing the extended essay in a specific 'order' or certain tasks benefited you in any way? A: Completing the in an orderly way taking each step and not skipping any is extremely important, its so important to make sure at the beginning that your info can answer your question before you even start writing the essay, make sure you know how to analyze the tools that you have chosen and that they can answer the research question. Q: What should you absolutely DO? A: You should absolutely ask a lot of questions to your teacher especially in the beginning stages when creating a research question. one of the biggest advantages to the EE is that you get SO MUCH TIME during the summer to move forward with it. this is obvious but if it wasn't obvious enough please complete the first draft as soon as possible and make sure you are relentless with your questions and research schedule. Q: What should you absolutely AVOID? A: You should absolutely avoid waiting until the last minute to find your RQ and put off your research. The more time you spend on your research the easier you will complete the writing part Q: Do you have any other advice that you would like to give in completing the extended essay? A: Just do it, don't take too long. Q: What are some traps or things to avoid when completing the extended essay? A: Don't choose tools and then realize later on that they wont answer your research question. |
