Part 1
You will be randomly placed in 1 of 3 possible groups, Free-Market Economy, Command Economy, or Traditional/Mixed Economy. Each group will defend WHY and HOW their economic system is the most equitable, equal, and efficient in terms of income distribution compared to the other 2 economic systems.
The discussion will take place in 3 phases:
- The discussion begins with each group making 3 claims as to why and how their economic system is the most equitable, equal, and efficient means of income distribution.
- After each group is heard, your will reconvene with your group and create a counter-argument for each of the claims made by the other 2 groups.
- Each group will deliver their counter-arguments to each of the opposing groups claims.
- Within your arguments you should use subject-specific economic terminology and theories such as the Lorenz Curve, the Gini coefficient, relative and absolute poverty, proportional tax, regressive tax, progressive tax, etc.
- You are allowed to use slides during your discussion.
Individual Task:
Part 2
Create a 6 slide presentation addressing the questions below:
- Why has society accepted and confined itself to the limited options of 3 economic systems?
- What is the most equitable, equal, and efficient means of distributing income to society?
- Is there a better way to distribute income to members of a society other than the methods we just discussed?
Let's share what you learned with your classmates. Through a very informal 'presentation', you will share the conflicts you researched. This is what I want you to do:
- create a 6 slide presentation, 2 slides for each question, you have 2 slides to address the important aspects of your answer, NO more, NO less.
- 3-5 min to present and address your slides to the class [we will do this from your seats, no one is getting up in front of the class]
Things to consider:
- A good slide presentation will have a minimal amount of words. If your slide contains a lot of words then your audience is not listening to you, instead they’re too busy reading your slide.
- Your slides should contain visuals, visuals that help provide context to what you are telling your audience.
- If you learned something, then you don’t need a script or notes to refer to, because you learned it and not memorized it.
